Learning objectives

  • • Identify an uptrend, a downtrend and a sideways market from a chart.
  • • Explain higher highs and lower lows in plain English.
  • • Decide whether a trend is worth following.

Key vocabulary

trend · uptrend · downtrend · sideways · higher high · lower low

Starter

Hill walk: sketch three journeys on the board (uphill, downhill, flat) and ask pupils which direction to keep walking.

Main activities

10 min

Whole-class read of the trend hill lesson, drawing the steps on the board.

20 min

Pupils complete the Trends module lessons and quizzes.

15 min

Chart sort: give pupils six printed charts to sort into up, down and sideways.

Discussion questions

  • • Why do traders say “the trend is your friend”?
  • • How do you know when a trend has ended?
  • • What is the risk in guessing a turn too early?

Assessment

  • • Correctly sorts at least five of six charts.
  • • Quiz average of 70% or higher.

Homework

Track one thing for a week (steps, screen time, temperature) and say whether it is trending up, down or sideways.
